- Here is some very preliminary information about the use of ppp.device
- with AmiTCP 4.3:
-
- I am afraid so far I have not had time to examine AmiTCP 4.3
- closely, so at the moment I cannot give you complete instructions
- how to install ppp.device for AmiTCP 4.3, and how to upgrade your
- PPP/AmiTCP 4.1/4.2 installation to AmiTCP 4.3.
-
- The problem is that the startnet script in AmiTCP 4.3 and the whole
- initialization mechanism has (once again) been radically changed since
- the previous versions, probably because of the new dialer, and so has
- the way the configuration is passed on from the startnet script to
- ppp.device.
-
-
- For the time being I recommend the following:
-
- - If you are currently using AmiTCP 4.1/4.2 and ppp.device, and do not
- HAVE to upgrade to AmiTCP 4.3 for some reason, then you should probably
- NOT upgrade yet. If you still want to upgrade and experience problems
- please ask "amitcp-support@nsdi.fi" for help.
-
- - If you do not have a working installation of AmiTCP 4.1/4.2 and
- ppp.device and want to see if it works better with AmiTCP 4.3: Please
- delete ALL parts of your old installation, reinstall AmiTCP 4.1/4.2
- from scratch and apply the 4.3 patch. Then configure AmiTCP for
- ppp.device, using the dialer in AmiTCP. DO NOT follow the instructions
- in PPP.guide regarding the AmiTCP 4.2/4.3 installation in this case.
-
-
- So far I have seen at least the following problem areas when upgrading:
-
- - Several users have had the problem that the AmiTCP 4.3 patch fails
- for some files. At least in one observed case this was because of
- a version of "bootpconfig" that is not supported by the 4.3 patch
- archive. If you are using a version of bootpconfig other than the one
- that came with AmiTCP 4.1 or 4.2 (e.g. if you are using the one from
- the bpc15.lha archive), then please restore your original version
- of bootpconfig *before* applying the 4.3 patch, so it is upgraded
- by the 4.3 patch. You cannot normally mix different versions of the
- AmiTCP and bootpconfig binaries. In particular: the version of
- bootpconfig from the bpc15.lha archive does not work with AmiTCP 4.3.
-
- - Some users have reported problems when using the new AmiTCP and
- bootpconfig binaries with the old "startnet" script.
-
- - The new startnet script filters out some of the options ppp.device
- uses (e.g. ATH).
-
- - Although the new AmiTCP dialer is more confortable to use than the one
- in ppp.device, it has some problems of its own, e.g. it does not seem
- to support reconnection after a reset. Besides it suffers from the
- same problems as most other external dialers, i.e. there could be
- timing problems if your Internet provider has very short PPP timeouts,
- and your modem might hang up immediately after dialing unless you send
- "AT&D0" to your modem first.
-
-
- If you are wondering why all of these problems have occured, or why they
- could not be resolved or circumvented earlier:
-
- A while ago I released ppp.device 1.45. This release was delayed mostly
- because I was waiting for feedback from the authors of AmiTCP and
- I-Net 225. I knew that new versions of both protocol stacks were about to
- be released, and I wanted ppp.device to be compatible with both protocol
- stacks, and wanted to provide users with detailed up-to-date installation
- instructions.
-
- At the time I asked NSDi if anything has been changed from AmiTCP 4.2 to
- 4.3 that affects ppp.device or its installation or configuration in any
- way, and the answer I got from them was "no", so I went ahead and released
- ppp.device 1.45.
-
- Unfortunately NSDi apparently DID make many changes to AmiTCP that
- affected ppp.device, so the installation instructions for AmiTCP 4.2/4.3
- in the PPP 1.45 docs really only apply to AmiTCP 4.2, not to 4.3.
-
- I am sorry for the confusion arising from this, but it was caused by (for
- me) unforeseeable changes in AmiTCP, so I believe I am not at fault here.
- I'll try to release a new version of ppp.device with installation
- instructions for AmiTCP 4.3 as soon as I can, and will also try to make
- upgrading your PPP configuration from 4.2 to 4.3 as simple as possible.
-
-
- Btw, I realize that the use of AmiTCP/ppp.device (as well as I-Net 225/
- ppp.device) for Internet access is somewhat controversial. Some users
- like the very high flexibility, but there are also many users who would
- prefer a simpler and easier-to-configure GUI-driven protocol stack,
- similar to e.g. Trumpet WinSock or TCP/IP stacks on Macintosh.
-
- If you are not really happy with AmiTCP and are looking for a protocol
- stack for Internet access that is easier to use please read my other
- article ("Miami - a new TCP/IP stack for Internet access"). This might
- soon be what you are looking for :-)
